Maman Abdurrahman calls sports industrialization a growth driver for MSMEs

Jakarta – Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) Maman Abdurrahman mentioned the important role of sports industrialization as a driver of growth and strengthening of SMEs in Indonesia. According to him, it can have a positive impact on the economy if it is maximized. He expressed this when he was a speaker at the 2025 Indonesia Sports Summit (ISS) in Jakarta, Sunday (7/12). “Ultimately, we need to start discussing how sports can enter the industrial sector, drive the economy and develop MSMEs,” Maman said in a written statement on Monday (8/12/2025). Scroll TO CONTINUE CONTENT In the session themed Empowering The Sports Industry Value Chain, Maman emphasized that the strategy to increase the economic added value of the sports industry can only be achieved through the involvement of many parties. “We can only make this happen through cooperation, high commitment and consistency in leveraging all the resources we have,” he said. As a first step, Maman explained that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of MSMEs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Kemendagri) regarding synergy and cooperation in the management of the use of central to regional sports facilities and infrastructure. According to him, this is proof of the government’s seriousness in implementing President Prabowo’s directive to strengthen central, regional and private cooperation to encourage economic growth. “As a pilot project, the initial steps will be focused on 20 football stadiums, and certainly will not stop at football. I believe the sports industry can be a strong foundation for the development of MSMEs, considering the large fan base and potential multiplier effect,” he said. For this reason, Maman hopes that all sports people can be actively involved, not only as beneficiaries, but also as actors in the sports industry chain in various production lines. Maman explained that the economic value of the Indonesian sports industry is estimated to reach about IDR 41 trillion per year until 2024 and is expected to increase to IDR 96 trillion in 2027. “If we all work together to build the industry, then sports will no longer be seen as just a hobby, but rather one way to achieve a better economic future,” he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza emphasized the importance of community support to strengthen the national sports industry, one of which is through the purchase of products made by local children. “If you are true sports fans, you will know that our products are no less good and no less great,” he concluded.
