PKH task force will investigate logs floating and piling up during the Sumatra disaster

Jakarta – The Forest Area Control Task Force (PKH) has stated that it will investigate the origin of logs that were washed away and piled up when flash floods hit Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. The task force will check the facts of what happened. “What is clear is that we are waiting for the facts to be investigated in the media. Is it really a natural disaster or something like that,” the head of the Attorney General’s Penkum, Anang Supriatna, told reporters on Tuesday (2/12/2025). Anang guaranteed that law enforcement will act if there are any violations related to the logs. “If there is human action, if there is an element of intent there, then law enforcement will definitely take legal action in the future,” stressed Anang. FYI, logs were carried away by flash floods in North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh. The large pile of wood then became the focus of members of the DPR RI. The Ministry of Forestry itself suspects that the logs come from land rights holders (PHAT) located in other use areas (APL). He said the temporary suspicion is that the wood was cut down and rotted away and carried away by the flood currents. “We detected that it is from PHAT in APL. PHAT is the holder of land rights. In the logging area we detected from PHAT in APL, the mechanism for natural growth of wood follows Forestry Regulations, in this case SIPPUH, Forest Product Administration Information System,” Director General of Law Enforcement (Gakkum) of the Ministry of Forestry, Antgro Jan1, reported on Saturday. However, Dwi said that his party cannot rule out the potential that the timber comes from illegal practices. The logs themselves are now scattered in residential areas and on the coast. The flash flood and landslide disasters in West Sumatra, Aceh and North Sumatra killed 659 people. In addition, 1 million people became refugees as a result of the disaster. (on/off)
