Jakarta – DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said Jakarta’s status as the most populous city in the world is wrong. He said that Jakarta is currently ranked 30th in the world. “So in my opinion, if it is said that Jakarta is the most densely populated city, it is wrong. Because Jakarta is actually the 30th most densely populated city,” Pramono said on Tuesday (2/12/2025) at the Sahid Hotel, Central Jakarta. “But yesterday, because the agglomeration was considered Jakarta, its population became 42 million, beating Bangladesh, New Delhi, Tokyo and so on,” he continued. SCROLL TO CONTINUE CONTENT Pramono emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government remains serious about dealing with the issue of density and spatial distribution, from controlling occupancy, building public transport, to providing green open spaces. “But for me, it is a reference for us to be more active in building and improving Jakarta,” he added. It is known, quoted from ABC, on Tuesday (25/11), the population division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs ranked Jakarta as the first most populous city in the world, followed by Dhaka. The capital of Bangladesh is home to nearly 40 million residents. Tokyo fell to third place with 33 million inhabitants after years of being in first place. Tokyo’s stagnant population growth and recently faced a population crisis has caused its position to decline. ΩThe Special Staff of the Governor of DKI Jakarta for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, explained the number of 42 million residents of Jakarta according to the definition of Degree of Urbanization. Chico said, if you use a country-specific definition, the projected population of Jakarta in 2025 will be 12 million and ranked as the 30th most populous city in the world. “In 2025, according to the definition of Degree of Urbanization, Jakarta (Indonesia) will be the most populated city in the world with 42 million inhabitants,” says Chico in his statement, Thursday (27/11). “However, if you use a country-specific definition as in the 2018 WUP revision, the population of Jakarta in 2025 is only projected to be 12 million and is the 30th most populous city in the world,” he added. Chico explained that millions of people are active in Jakarta every day. They come from eight buffer areas, namely Bogor, Tangerang Regency, Bogor Regency, South Tangerang, Depok, Bekasi City, Tangerang City and Bekasi Regency. “They come to work, school, college, do business, seek medical treatment, and even take care of public services. This mobility is what makes Jakarta feel much denser than its official population,” he explained. Chico said that if we refer to global data, the number of residents is described as active in the Jakarta area and its surroundings (mobile phone daily). Meanwhile, Dukcapil data calculates the population based on NIK registered with addresses in Jakarta, official government data. Therefore, the data for 42 million people recorded worldwide is based on daily activities, not official population. Meanwhile, Dukcapil data, 11,010,514 people were recorded based on net population data for the first semester of 2025 for DKI Jakarta Province, which was obtained from the Directorate General of Dukcapil, Ministry of Home Affairs.
