SC decision on bail of Umar Khalid-Sharjeel Imam reserved, police made this claim in court
The Supreme Court reserved its verdict on the bail plea of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and others in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. A bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria completed the hearing against the Delhi High Court’s September 2 order, which rejected his bail. The applicants cited detention for more than five years, trial delays and a lack of evidence of incitement to violence. The Delhi Police called it a conspiracy aimed at changing the government and causing economic crisis in the entire country. Police cited WhatsApp group, DPSG and Jamia Jagriti Abhiyan team. The police claim that the delay was caused by the petitioners, and if they cooperate, the trial could be completed in two years. I was not in Delhi when the riots took place. Sharjeel Imam had said in an earlier hearing that he was not a terrorist. Sharjeel expressed anger at being called a dangerous intellectual terrorist without a full trial or punishment. Meanwhile, Umar Khalid said that he was not in Delhi when the riots took place. I want to say I am not a terrorist. Advocate Siddharth Dave, who is fighting Sharjeel’s case in court, said: “I want to say that I am not a terrorist as the police have told me. I am not anti-national as the government has claimed. I am a citizen of this country by birth. I have not been convicted of any crime till now.” In such a situation, the allegation of conspiracy cannot be made. Arguing before the Anjaria bench, Justice Arvind Kumar and NV Dave said that Sharjeel was arrested on January 28, 2020, a few days before the riots. No criminal conspiracy related to the riots can therefore be made out on the basis of his speeches. An FIR was registered against him in March 2020. 3 Share this story Tags
