Djakarta – Police have arrested two security guards who stole iron contaminated with radioactive cesium-137 from the PT PMT warehouse, Cikande, Serang. It turned out that one of the perpetrators had made a theft report to the Cikande Police. “The offender initially reported the theft. However, after we conducted an investigation, it turned out that the person concerned was also involved in the theft,” Cikande police chief AKP Tatang told reporters on Thursday (11/12/2025). Tatang said the two security guards arrested were SH and SM. The suspect SM was the mastermind of the theft, he invited an employee with the initials RO. After that, the police arrested the collector who had a junk shop in Bandung District, Serang Regency. The Banten Police Gegana team also inspected and disinfected the stall area. “For evidence of theft, we moved everything from the scrapyard where the goods were stored back to PT PMT. Meanwhile, Deputy Gakkum of the Ministry of Environment (KLH) Inspector General Rizal Irawan said the perpetrator stole 200 kilograms of iron exposed to radioactivity from the PT PMT warehouse and took it to a scrap yard. “The items stolen consisted of various types with a total of about 200 kilograms. All were returned to PT PMT’s interim storage. Thank God, these items did not have time to circulate outside the area and are still intact,” Inspector General Rizal Irawan said. According to Rizal, the warehouse at PT PMT is a temporary storage warehouse. The government will build a permanent warehouse to store items exposed to radiation. Inspector General Rizal said that BRIN and Bapeten are currently still looking for a suitable location for the construction of the permanent warehouse. Because there are several criteria that must be considered. “There are many criteria that must be met. For example, not being in an earthquake zone, not being in an area prone to flooding, and meeting the technical requirements for the storage of radionuclides,” he added. (aik/fas)
