Sumatra disaster death toll update: North Sumatra 217, Aceh 96, West Sumatra 129

Jakarta – The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has provided the latest developments in data on victims of floods and landslides in Sumatra. BPBD recorded an increase in deaths or missing victims. Head of BNPB, Lt. Gen. TNI Suharyanto, said the death toll in the North Sumatra (North Sumatra) region has reached 217 people. He said during today’s evacuation process, many victims were found in the South Tapanuli area. “The death toll for North Sumatra is 217 people who died, then 209 are still missing,” Suharyanto said at a press conference on Sunday (30/11/2025). Data on deaths is spread across 11 districts/cities. “In Aceh, there are 96 deaths and 75 are missing. For affected Aceh with deaths, there are 11 districts/cities. But if the affected districts/cities are affected, there are 18,” he said. Finally, for the West Sumatra region, the number of victims who died was 129, while 118 others were still missing. Suharyanto said that the condition of West Sumatra is worse than that of Aceh and North Sumatra. “The death toll is 129, 118 missing, 16 injured,” he said. President Prabowo’s direction Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Pratikno revealed President Prabowo Subianto’s direction on dealing with flood and landslide disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra (North Sumatra) and West Sumatra (Sumbar). Prabowo, according to Pratikno, ordered all national forces to deal with floods in the three provinces. “The President ordered to increase all national forces, focus on dealing with the emergency response as quickly as possible. Mobilization of evacuation, deployment of logistics, protection of refugees, then deployment of health workers, repair of infrastructure, transport, communication, as well as monitoring in the field,” Pratikno said while chairing the Disaster Emergency Management Coordination Meeting, the North, BNP and North Emergency Management Meeting. Sumatra Provincial Government, at Silangit Airport, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra Province, Sunday (11/30). Pratikno said the government has distributed aid to restore communications in the affected areas in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. According to Pratikno, the evacuation process was also accelerated. “It was previously reported that logistical supplies continue to flow from the government and non-governmental organizations. At a certain point, they will continue to increase and will continue to be distributed. All national forces are therefore being mobilized to speed up the emergency response and restore everything immediately,” he explained. The government is preparing post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction scenarios. Pratikno emphasized that the government will also continue to focus on dealing with emergency response. “At the same time, we are also preparing scenarios for recovery. Rehabilitation and reconstruction. Of course we are focusing on emergency response, but we are preparing the rehabilitation and reconstruction scenario stages,” he said. The government is currently accelerating the provision of temporary housing for residents who have lost their homes. Pratikno said the government will speed up emergency response in the field. “There are several things that need to be prioritized. I have discussed with the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure on how to carry out quick recovery, including for temporary housing,” he said. “We will support how resources are deployed. But of course it’s not just resource deployment, but how to synergize in the field,” he added. The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture also expressed his appreciation towards the officers working in the field. He also appreciated the volunteers who helped deal with this disaster. “Thank you to the TNI, Polri and local government staff who are working hard to make temporary housing possible while rehabilitation and reconstruction will also be carried out soon,” he said.
