New Delhi, November 26 (IANS). According to official information given by the Ministry of Electronics and IT on Wednesday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated the Aadhaar card numbers of over 2 crore deceased persons as part of a nationwide cleanliness drive to maintain the continued accuracy of the Aadhaar database. The ministry said in its statement that the Aadhaar number previously allotted to any person shall not be re-allotted to another person. However, in case of death of a person, it is extremely important that the Aadhaar number of the deceased Aadhaar holder is deactivated. It is important to do this so that the identity of the deceased cannot be used for any fraudulent activity or in an unauthorized manner. Apart from this, UIDAI also introduced a new facility earlier this year under which information about a deceased Aadhaar card holder can be given by family members. This facility is currently available to the families of deceased Aadhaar card holders in 25 states and union territories using the civil registration system. They can use MyAadhaar portal for this. In addition, the integration process with the portal for the remaining states/UTs is currently underway. The ministry says after the deceased Aadhaar cardholder authenticates himself, he will have to submit the Aadhaar number, death registration number and demographic details of the deceased on the portal. Further steps will be taken on the process of deactivating the Aadhaar number of the deceased after due process of verification of the information provided by the family member. UIDAI encourages Aadhaar card holders to report the death of any Aadhaar card holder member of their family on the MyAadhaar portal.
