140 crore -people benefit from GST reform, tax reduced on 315 goods: Nirmala Sitharaman

Madurai, September 19 (IANS). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took part in the 80th anniversary of the Tamil Nadu Foodgrass Merchants Association on Friday. In this ceremony held in the Ida Shadow Auditorium of Madurai, he described GST reforms as ‘Diwali Gifts of the Nation’ and said it would benefit 140 million people. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated the Tamil Nadu Foodgrass Merchants Association on the achievements of 80 years and appreciated the success of four five generations of businesses such as Shakti Masala, Idhayam Ginjeli Oil. Sitharaman said: “In 1977, FSSAI set quality standards for food. Their agmark seal is guaranteed.” He described GST reform as a revolution and said that the number of traders from 65 lakh to 1.51 crore was increased. He said: “The tax on 315 items has been reduced to two plates. GST on milk, cheese and quark has been reduced from 5 to 0 percent. 99 percent of the items are now 5 percent.” Sitharaman said that GST reforms reached Rs 2 Lakh Crore in the hands of people and that trade has increased ten times. In response to the opposition’s claims, Sitharaman said: “It is wrong that our taxes have reduced on social media pressure. The decision was taken by the GST council and finance ministers of all states.” Sitharaman made clear: “It is not necessary to pretend that he is reducing the Modi government and the NDA to lower high rates.” He said Prime Minister Modi instructed to lower tax before Navratri. Sitharaman described the municipal tax to lower the historical step, saying that if the economy inflates, both GST plates can be mixed in one. Referring to the Production Cedication (PLI) scheme, he said that the manufacturers benefited from this. He described Madurai as an ancient city and said: “Industrial progress is also needed in Madurai, Tiruppur and Coimbatore, along with Salem, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and herdalore.” Sitharaman, founder of the association, SP, thanks Jayaprakasham and Professor Rama Srinivasan.
