India said on Friday that three Bangladeshi smugglers who were trying to steal cattle by crossing the border were killed in a fight. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) therefore rejected Dhaka’s claim that these people were lynched by a mob in Tripura. External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said the incident took place on October 15, about three kilometers inside Indian territory, where the three Bangladeshi smugglers were killed. He said, “A group of three miscreants from Bangladesh crossed the international border and tried to steal cattle from Bidyabil village on the Indian side.” Jaiswal answered a media query on this issue. “They (Bangladeshi smugglers) attacked and injured local villagers with iron rods and knives, killing one villager. Other villagers came there and resisted the attackers,” the foreign ministry spokesman said. Jaiswal said that local officials reached the spot where two smugglers were found dead. He said, “The third smuggler died in the hospital the next day. All three’s bodies were handed over to the Bangladesh side. The police have also registered a case.” “This incident highlights the need for Bangladesh to take necessary steps to maintain the sanctity of the international border and support the installation of border fences where necessary to prevent cross-border crime and smuggling,” he said. In Dhaka, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh registered a strong protest and condemned the incident. “This heinous act is a serious violation of human rights and the rule of law,” she said. Dhaka also urged India to conduct an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.
