Jakarta – BMKG predicts the potential for extreme weather during the Christmas to New Year period on the island of Java and a number of other provinces. BPBD DKI Jakarta said it has alerted staff and equipment to deal with potential extreme weather at the end of the year. The CEO of the DKI Jakarta Province BPBD, Isnawa Adji, said that all levels have been asked to increase vigilance and preparedness to face potential hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, strong winds and fallen trees. He said there are 30 thousand RTs in Jakarta that need to be protected from possible flooding. “BPBD DKI Jakarta together with related regional officials have prepared anticipatory steps. Our personnel are on standby in the field to support emergency handling with evacuation equipment and other supporting facilities. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through BPBD also appealed to the public to remain alert to the potential for moderate to heavy intensity rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds. “Cooperation between the government, society and the business world is very important to face this rainy season. With joint preparedness we can reduce the risks and impacts,” Isnawa added. As is known, BMKG predicts the potential for extreme weather during the Christmas to New Year (Nataru) period. Residents in Java, Bali, NTT and Papua are asked to be aware of possible disasters due to the impact of extreme rain. “In January, all areas of Java, Bali, NTT, NTB, South Sulawesi, South Papua will experience high to very high rainfall, between 300 and 500 millimeters per month,” Teuku Faisal Fathani, head of BMKG, said in a coordination meeting at the office of the Ministry of Interior, Central Jakarta, Monday (1/12). Apart from that, BMKG sees that sea waves with a height above 2.5-4 meters are predicted to be zero. According to him, there is no threat of high waves in Indonesian territory during the December and January period. “However, average waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters may occur in various water areas such as western and southern Sumatra, the Sunda Strait, southern Java, NTT, Anambas Islands, Natuna, the North Pacific and Halmahera,” he continued.
