Dhaka, November 29 (IANS). The growing internal conflict within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has led to a major ruckus in an attempt to establish dominance in Saltha Upazila of Faridpur district. More than 100 people were injured on Saturday in a series of clashes between two rival groups. Local media gave this information. A long-running dispute between supporters of BNP leader Zahid Matubbor and Nuru Matubbor in Faridpur’s Gatti Union has escalated in recent weeks, leading to several clashes, Bangladesh’s leading newspaper The Business Standard quoted locals as saying. Reports indicate that tensions flared again on Saturday when supporters from both sides, armed with local weapons such as shields, spears and bamboo sticks, engaged in violent clashes. Confirming the incident, Saltha Police Station in-charge (Investigation) KM Maroof Hasan Russell said that the situation came to an end around 11:45 am. after a long effort was brought under control. Additional police forces were deployed to maintain order and prevent further unrest. Clashes broke out at three places in the Ballia Bazaar area of Gatti Union, involving thousands of people from at least 20 villages, local residents said. In this sequence, about 20 houses were vandalized and a cattle pen was looted. Citing eyewitnesses, The Business Standard reported that the violence forced women and children to flee the area, which has turned into a war zone, in search of safety. Hospital sources reportedly confirmed that more than 100 people were injured, of whom 50 were admitted to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. A BNP party member was killed and 18 others injured in violent clashes between party candidates and people denied tickets in several districts of Bangladesh earlier this month, according to local media reports. –IANS MS/DKP Share this story Tags
