As obesity and diabetes spread rapidly around the world, pharmaceutical companies are introducing a variety of drugs to combat these lifestyle diseases. Eli Lilly launched its anti-obesity drug, Monjaro, in India in March 2025, followed by Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk’s weight loss injection, Vegovy, in June. Today, Novo Nordisk launched its weight loss drug, Ozempic, in India. We also tell you about Ozempic, its price and how it works. What is Ozempic and how does it work? According to Nordisk’s official website, Ozempic is a prescription drug primarily used to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. The drug’s main compound, semaglutide, works similarly to a natural hormone called GLP-1. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), is a hormone produced after eating. It plays an important role in controlling blood sugar, reducing appetite and slowing down digestion. When Ozempic is used, the semaglutide in it reduces appetite, controls blood sugar and slows digestion, leading to less food intake and weight loss. According to Vikrant Shrotiya, managing director of Novo Nordisk India, Ozempic will be available in three dosages: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg. A one-week dose of 0.25 mg costs ₹2,200, and a four-week dose costs about ₹8,800. A single dose of 0.5 mg is priced at ₹2,543, and a four-week dose at ₹10,170. A one-week dose of 1 mg costs ₹2,793, and a four-week dose costs about ₹11,175. What are the possible side effects of Ozempic? Who should not take Ozempic? It is always important to consult your doctor before using Ozempic.
