Misuse of rabies vaccine: A strange case has come to light from Bihar, where a person went to the Community Health Center for treatment of cough and chest pain. The health workers there crossed the lines of negligence and unnecessarily administered anti-rabies vaccine to that person. Not only that, the date of the next dose of the vaccine is also written on the slip. This case is reported from Sangrampur CHC of Motihari district. Now this case has become very viral on social media and people are raising questions about the system. The question is that if a rabies vaccine is administered to a person without any need, can it pose any health risks? Let’s try to find out the answer to this from the doctor. Dr. Lokendra Gupta, Director of Emergency Medicine of Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, told News18 that it is absolutely wrong to administer a rabies vaccine to a patient who has cough and chest pain. It is playing with the patient. It is not right for any person to do this. Anti-rabies vaccine is given when someone is bitten by a dog, cat, monkey, bat or any wild animal. The bite of these animals can cause fatal rabies infection and to protect against this, anti-rabies vaccine is administered. There is no point in administering this vaccine in any other disease. Should anti-rabies vaccine be administered unnecessarily? Doctor Lokendra told that a rabies vaccine is usually given only when a person is bitten by a dog or other animal that causes rabies infection. However, for people who live around dogs all the time or work as dog handlers, anti-rabies vaccine is given as a pre-exposure vaccine. Vets also take this vaccine first. Apart from this, the vaccine is only administered to ordinary people if they are bitten by a dog, cat or monkey. Vaccination is not given to ordinary people without need. Doctors give this vaccine as needed. Is this vaccine dangerous to health for no reason? Experts said that a rabies vaccine usually has no side effects. If a person wants to get this vaccine, even as a precautionary reason, then there is no harm in it. Its side effects are seen only in rare cases. However, if the person has a cough, chest pain, fever or any other kind of illness, there is no point in taking this vaccine. People should not be afraid of this vaccine, but should only get it when needed. There is no benefit to being vaccinated for no reason. Be careful about this.
