But very few people know that Russia (then Soviet Union) also had a major role in setting up IIT Bombay. After independence, India wanted to grow rapidly in the technical field. But for this there was a need for better engineering colleges. Which is equipped with modern resources and better teachers. During this period, India got full support from the Soviet Union. When IIT Bombay was established in 1958, the Soviet Union provided technical, financial and educational assistance on a large scale. Russia provided modern laboratories, machines and expert teachers to India. 550 Acre Campus IIT Bombay’s campus is spread over 550 acres in Powai. Initially, the budget for collecting equipment and necessary resources for this was set at around 2 million dollars. Apart from this, the annual expenses were kept at about 1 million dollars for five years. This aid was received with the help of UNESCO. The aid received from the USSR at that time included 59 experts and 14 technicians, and 27 scholarships were also given by UNESCO to Indian teachers for training in the USSR. According to a report from the 1960s, goods worth ₹ 57.35,000 (Rs. 57.35 lakh) were recovered with UNESCO channeled assistance – of which the USSR’s contribution was ₹ 55.50,000. Dream Branch of Computer Science Toppers: The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) branch of IIT Bombay is considered the most prestigious in India. The students here get offers from top tech companies in the country and abroad—Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon. Many students travel straight to Silicon Valley. Highest Placement Package: IIT Bombay received a placement package of Rs 1 crore 48 lakh this year in the placement season 2025-2026. This college makes records in terms of placements every year.
