Concerns about social security have increased due to the sighting of leopards again in the residential area of Jaipur. On Tuesday evening, at around 2 o’clock, the heavy snow was rising, when information was received about the leopard going hunting in Sector-10 of Vidyadhar Nagar, a residential area. In the morning, local people found pug marks from a leopard near the calf’s carcass, which showed that the threat was indeed real. After this incident, the team of Rajasthan forest department became active and search operation was started on the basis of pug marks. The local administration has heightened vigilance in the surrounding areas. This is not the first time – just six days ago, on November 20, the leopard was spotted in the Civil Lines area of the capital. At that time he even entered the bungalow of state ministers and a school due to which there was panic among the people. After a long effort, the forest department calmed him down and released him safely in the forest. Why is the movement of leopards in cities increasing? Forest department and experts say that the main reasons for the increase in such incidents in recent months are urban expansion, decreasing extent of forests and lack of prey (animal abundance) in the forest. In particular, areas around protected wildlife areas such as the Jhalana–Amagarh Leopard Conservation Reserve are now rapidly turning into residential and commercial areas. As a result, the distance between forest and human habitation is almost ending for leopards. What should the local people do now – Caution and awareness are needed; do not graze or leave animals in the open at night or in the morning and evening. If anyone sees a leopard’s pug marks or sees the animal roaming, you should immediately inform the forest department or local police. Take special care of children, old people and those traveling through unfamiliar routes. Do not feed pets, calves, meat etc. not left in the open – it can attract leopards. The Forestry Department also appealed to the citizens not to take such incidents lightly: “Those who see a leopard should not make noise, but should inform immediately so that both the animal and people remain safe.” Share this story Tags
