Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment (KLH) is investigating the source of the logs swept away by floods in Sumatra. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, minister of environmental affairs, aims to complete the investigation of the case in three months. “I am asking for three months, I hope three months. If it is more than that, we will catch a cold. We forget. Usually the criteria for a disaster is, if the ground is dry, we forget it all,” Hanif said at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta, Tuesday (2/12/2025). Currently there are eight companies that will be invited by the Ministry of the Environment. The eight companies are known to operate in the Batang Toru Watershed (DAS), North Sumatra. SCROLL TO CONTINUE CONTENT Hanif said that his party will study the documents of these companies. He also immediately visited the place where the logs were found in North Sumatra. “God willing, I will go there on Thursday to take over, to see first-hand, so that I can get an idea, an idea of how the construction of the case is,” he explained. He added that his party also checked the map description. These initial findings will be followed up with an on-site inspection. “But in general, from the map study, in the upstream part it really became a dryland plantation, yes, dryland cultivation, in the upstream even. Then there is a new oil palm. It looks like the picture of the plot. Exactly like what we have. We are currently investigating it further, related to this. But the data is already there. We will try,” he added. Hanif emphasized that this investigation will be different from the Ciliwung River case. This is because all data can be seen directly from satellite images. “Well, it’s different. Sorry, in Ciliwung it’s very heterogeneous. So we don’t even know what the cause is. But it can be seen. Where did the wood come from? I didn’t come before the investigation. I didn’t want to disturb the independence of many of my fellow investigators. But our logic is, from the satellite images we can already see how it is,” he said. As is known, the Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said that his party will invite eight companies that operate in the Batang Toru Watershed (DAS), North Sumatra. This is to investigate the source of the logs that were swept away by the flood. Hanif said this after the 2025 Proklim Awards event in Jakarta, Monday (1/12). He said his party has identified eight companies in flood-affected areas in the Batang Toru watershed, ranging from oil palm plantations to gold mining companies. “There are eight that, based on our analysis of satellite images, contributed to make this rain worse. So, we are currently investigating it and I have asked the deputy Gakkum (law enforcement) to take quick and measurable action,” Hanif said, as reported by Antara. Based on satellite images, his party can project events in the disaster area during heavy rain. “So, on Monday we will immediately call all the units based on the study of satellite images, we can see everything from satellite images so that we can logically project what happens to those conditions during heavy rain,” he said. Then Hanif also said that his party will ask for an explanation from each company with high-resolution satellite images to confirm the condition of the location of the site where the company was located before the flood. “So that we can prove it, where does the wood come from,” he said.
