Updated: Sun, 30 Nov 2025 02:12 (IST) Road safety is at risk due to fog in Delhi. This year 1056 people lost their lives due to negligence. The risk of accidents has increased due to reduced visibility in fog. The situation becomes more serious due to speeding and violation of traffic rules. Drivers are advised to be careful and follow the rules. Galloping vehicles passing in the fog on the Ring Road near Rajghat. Jagran Mohammad Saqib, New Delhi. Due to low visibility due to increasing fog in the capital, carelessness of drivers further increases the risk of road accidents. Even a little carelessness in fog can cause a major accident. Despite this, many drivers do not seem ready to give up risky driving. Remove ads Read news only According to Delhi Traffic Police, 39,898 complaints were issued for violating mandatory traffic signals in the first seven months of this year, but the shocking thing is that 36,140 of these calls have not been paid yet. Till September 15, 3909 road accidents took place in Delhi, in which 1056 people died, while 3705 people were injured. This figure shows how indifferent the attitude of drivers is towards traffic rules. The police are taking strict action against such drivers by conducting continuous check campaigns, but the expected improvement in the situation is not visible. According to a senior traffic police officer, most of the accidents that occur in fog are caused by human error. Driving at high speed despite low visibility is also the main reason. At high speed it becomes difficult to control sudden obstacles and accidents occur. At the same time, not maintaining sufficient distance from the vehicle moving ahead is also a factor in an accident. Apart from this, misuse of high beam is also a major cause of accidents. The illumination of high beams in fog further reduces the visibility of the driver in front, due to which he cannot judge the road properly. Many drivers do not use fog lights or indicators. In some vehicles, rear lights or reflectors are missing or defective, which means that the driver behind cannot see the vehicle ahead. It is also extremely dangerous to constantly concentrate on calls, messages, internet media or mobile phone navigation in fog. Changing lanes suddenly or trying to overtake is also like inviting accidents. Apart from this, it is quite risky to drive in fog due to technical faults of the vehicle, poor condition of brakes, indicators, wipers, defogging system etc. At the same time, ignoring the warning signs, speed limits, fog area signs and detours installed on the road is also like inviting an accident. Stopping unnecessarily on the highway is also a major danger among speeding vehicles. The traffic police make people aware. In view of the increasing number of road accidents and traffic chaos, the traffic police are constantly conducting campaigns regarding road safety. The main aim of these campaigns is to reduce accidents, curb rule violations and make people aware of safe driving. The traffic police carry out intensive checks, especially during fog and pollution, so that effective action can be taken against offenses such as speeding, overloading, driving in the wrong lane, drunk driving, without a helmet and without a seat belt. Patrolling and deployment by the traffic police has been increased at major intersections, highways and black spots of the city. Apart from this, challans are also issued on commercial vehicles and tractor trolleys which do not install reflectors, brake lights and indicators at the rear of the vehicle. Awareness programs through internet media, schools, colleges and RWAs are also important. “Fog is not only a problem of weather, but is also a test of traffic discipline. If drivers maintain awareness and follow the rules, accidents that occur in fog can be prevented to a large extent. Drivers should drive at low speeds, use fog lights, have all vehicle equipment checked in time and avoid taking unnecessary risks on the road. In the coming days, stricter action will be taken against those who violate the rules.” -Satyaveer Katara, Additional Commissioner of Police Traffic Also Read- Road safety: Stationary vehicles on roads are turning deadly, truck spaces are missing on 98% of Delhi’s roads.
